HOMECalligraphy  Installation ArtworksSignature WorkーCrowded1/3

Crowded 1/3

Space and characters intersect.

Crowded 1/3 inscribes calligraphic characters onto thin silk organza, creating a layered structure in which lines drift, overlap, and reflect the scenery and space behind the translucent support. First exhibited in 2006 at Gallery Hanesagi in Kyoto, the work was subsequently re-staged both domestically and internationally, and later extended into derivative projects and commercial spaces. As a landmark piece within the installation series, it became a pivotal work that laid the foundation for the artist’s subsequent practice.

【Artist’s Statement】

Between What Appears and What Cannot Be Grasped

In this work, space and text intersect to liberate calligraphy from the act of “reading,” offering instead an encounter with the sheer presence of the line itself.
Characters, inscribed on sheer silk organza, become visible only from certain positions and distances, their form defined by meticulously controlled overlaps and densities.
The fabric’s translucency absorbs the surrounding environment and the presence of the viewer, shifting continuously through the interplay of light and shadow.

Composed in self-invented Japanese devoid of semantic meaning, the work reduces the written word to pure form, revealing the interval between what appears to the eye and what cannot be grasped.
This configuration could not have been realized through imagery or abstract painting alone—it is only through the act of shō (calligraphy) that the work attains its vitality.
The movement of the brush imparts speed, breath, and corporeality; each stroke records the weight of the body and the passage of time, allowing a presence and materiality to hover in space that no other medium can replicate.

By entering the installation, the viewer experiences the moment when the line floats in the air—an expanded field of perception that can only be opened through calligraphy.
